A board foot is a unit of volume, not area or length: 144 cubic inches, equal to a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 1 foot long. Any combination with the same volume is one board foot.

If all three dimensions are in inches, the formula is (t × w × L) ÷ 144 instead. This calculator takes length in feet, which is how lumber is normally specified, so it divides by 12.

Board footage is conventionally calculated from nominal dimensions, which is why a 2×4 counts as a full 2 × 4 even though it measures 1.5 × 3.5 in after surfacing.

Worked example

Ten 2×4s, eight feet long

  1. 1.Board feet per board: (2 × 4 × 8) ÷ 12 = 64 ÷ 12 = 5.3333 bf.
  2. 2.For ten boards: 5.3333 × 10 = 53.33 bf.
  3. 3.With a 15% waste allowance: 53.33 × 1.15 = 61.33 bf to buy.
  4. 4.At $4.50 per board foot: 61.33 × 4.50 = $276.00.
  5. 5.By actual surfaced size (1.5 × 3.5 in) the real volume is only 35 bf — about 34% less wood than the nominal figure, which is the trade norm.

Result: 53.33 board feet, about $276.00 including waste

What a board foot measures

A board foot is a unit of volume used almost exclusively for lumber, defined as 144 cubic inches — the volume of a piece one inch thick, twelve inches wide and one foot long. Because it is a volume rather than a length or an area, any board with the same total volume counts the same: a 1 × 12 × 1 ft, a 2 × 6 × 1 ft and a 1 × 6 × 2 ft are all exactly one board foot.

This is what makes it useful for pricing. Hardwood arrives in random widths and lengths rather than standard dimensions, so pricing per piece would be meaningless. Pricing by volume lets a supplier quote one rate for a species and grade regardless of how the individual boards happen to be sized.

The nominal versus actual trap

A "2×4" has not measured two inches by four inches for a long time. The board is sawn at roughly that size when green, then dried and planed smooth on all four sides, arriving at an actual 1.5 × 3.5 inches. Softwood dimensions each lose half an inch up to 6 inches nominal, and three-quarters of an inch above that — so a nominal 2×10 is actually 1.5 × 9.25 in.

The convention that catches people out is that board footage is calculated and billed on the nominal size. Ten 2×4×8s are sold as 53.3 board feet even though the wood you carry home is closer to 35 board feet of actual volume. This is not a swindle — it is a consistent, universally understood trade convention, and prices are set with it in mind — but it does mean that comparing a board-foot price against a real-volume calculation will always look wrong unless you know which basis is being used.

Hardwood thickness in quarters

Hardwood is usually specified in quarter-inches rather than whole inches, written with a slash: 4/4 ("four quarter") is one inch nominal, 8/4 is two inches, 5/4 is an inch and a quarter. The notation exists because hardwood is milled in a wider range of thicknesses than the standard softwood dimensions, and because it is frequently sold rough-sawn, where the nominal and actual thickness are much closer than for surfaced softwood. A 4/4 board bought rough may genuinely measure a full inch; the same board surfaced on two sides (S2S) typically arrives at about 13/16 in.

Why waste allowances are larger for woodworking

Framing lumber is used more or less as it comes, so a 10% allowance covers ordinary offcuts. Furniture and cabinet work is different: boards have knots, checks, sapwood and grain that has to be matched across a panel, and a woodworker will reject or cut around a significant fraction of the material bought. A 15% allowance is a minimum for straightforward work, 25–30% is common for anything where appearance matters, and figured or highly-graded stock can run higher still. Buying that margin up front matters more than usual with hardwood, because a second order weeks later may come from a different tree entirely and not match.

What this assumes, and where it stops

Assumptions

  • Thickness and width are entered as nominal dimensions, matching how lumber is specified and how board footage is conventionally billed.
  • The actual-size comparison uses standard North American surfaced (S4S) softwood dimensions. Rough-sawn and hardwood stock is closer to nominal, so the shortfall shown will overstate the difference for those.

Limitations

  • Does not account for the specific cutting list of your project — the waste allowance is a flat percentage, not a layout optimisation.
  • Softwood is often sold by the piece rather than by the board foot; the per-board-foot price here is most relevant for hardwood.
  • Board footage measures volume only. It says nothing about grade, moisture content, straightness or appearance, all of which affect what the wood is actually worth.

Common questions

Is a board foot the same as a linear foot?

No. A linear foot is just length, ignoring thickness and width entirely — ten 8 ft boards are 80 linear feet whether they are 2×4s or 2×12s. A board foot is a volume, so the same ten boards are 53.3 board feet as 2×4s but 160 board feet as 2×12s. Trim and moulding are usually sold by the linear foot; hardwood by the board foot.

Why is a 2×4 not actually 2 by 4 inches?

It is sawn to roughly that size, then dried and planed smooth on all four faces, which removes about half an inch in each dimension. The finished board measures 1.5 × 3.5 in. The nominal name survives because it describes the rough sawn size and because the entire framing trade — spans, spacings, fastener schedules — is built around those names.

What does 4/4 mean for hardwood?

It is thickness in quarter-inches: 4/4 is one inch, 5/4 is one and a quarter, 8/4 is two inches. Hardwood uses this notation because it is milled in more thicknesses than softwood and is often sold rough-sawn, where the stated thickness is close to what you actually get.
