How the calculation works

How many hertz one unit represents

Every value is converted to hertz first, then out to the target unit. This means n units need n factors rather than n² conversion pairs.

One hertz is one cycle per second. RPM and revolutions per second are the same physical quantity counted over different time bases, which is why 60 RPM is exactly 1 Hz.

Radians per second measures angular velocity rather than cycle count: one full revolution is 2π radians, so 1 Hz equals 2π ≈ 6.2832 rad/s. Physics and control theory use rad/s; mechanical specifications usually use RPM.

Beats per minute is dimensionally identical to RPM — both are "events per minute" — which is why they share a factor here.

Worked example

100 megahertz to hertz

  1. 1.One megahertz is 1,000,000 hertz, so 100 MHz is 100,000,000 hertz.
  2. 2.One hertz is 1 hertz, so divide: 100,000,000 ÷ 1 = 100,000,000.
  3. 3.Put another way, 1 MHz = 1,000,000 Hz.

Result: 100,000,000 Hz

  • Results are computed in double-precision floating point, which is exact to about 15 significant figures.
  • Very large or very small values are displayed in scientific notation to avoid misleading precision.

Common questions

How do I convert RPM to Hz?

Divide by 60, since hertz counts cycles per second and RPM counts them per minute. A motor at 3,000 RPM is turning at 50 Hz. To get radians per second instead, multiply the Hz figure by 2π.

What is the difference between Hz and rad/s?

Both describe how fast something rotates or oscillates, but hertz counts complete cycles while radians per second measures angle swept. One cycle is 2π radians, so the two differ by that factor. Engineering specs typically quote Hz or RPM; the underlying physics and control equations use rad/s.
