How the calculation works

This is the Grant/Hamwi method, one of several frame-size heuristics in clinical and fitness use. The thresholds differ by sex because average skeletal proportions differ between men and women.
Worked example
Male, 175 cm tall, 17 cm wrist
- 1.Ratio: 175 ÷ 17 = 10.29.
- 2.For a male, a ratio above 10.4 is a small frame and below 9.6 is a large frame — 10.29 falls in the medium range.
Result: Medium frame
What frame size is measuring
Two people can share the exact same height and body fat percentage and still carry noticeably different amounts of weight simply because their skeletons are different sizes. Frame size is an attempt to capture that: an estimate of skeletal build, independent of how much fat or muscle sits on top of it, most often approximated from the ratio between a fixed skeletal measurement — here, wrist circumference — and height.
The wrist is used because it is a joint with little fat or muscle covering it, so its circumference tracks bone structure fairly closely compared with, say, measuring around the waist or thigh, where soft tissue dominates the number.
Why frame size gets attached to weight charts
Height-only weight tables, of the kind long used in insurance and general health guidance, implicitly assume an average skeletal build for every height. Frame size was introduced as a rough correction: a large-framed person carries more bone and connective tissue at any given height, so a "normal" weight for their frame sits a bit higher than for a small-framed person of the same height, even before body fat is considered.
Frame size versus body type (somatotype)
Frame size is easy to confuse with the popular "body type" categories — ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph — but the two describe different things. Frame size is a narrow, more objective measurement of skeletal build from a bone-adjacent circumference. Somatotype is a much broader, older classification describing overall build, how someone tends to gain or lose weight, and even, in its original mid-20th-century form, aspects of temperament — claims that have not held up under modern scrutiny and are generally set aside today.

How frame-size estimates are actually used
In practice, frame size is a supporting detail rather than a standalone health metric — it adjusts the interpretation of other numbers rather than being tracked on its own. It shows up most in fitness and clinical contexts as a modifier to "ideal weight" ranges, and occasionally in strength sports, where a larger natural frame is associated with a higher achievable muscle mass ceiling regardless of training.
What this assumes, and where it stops

- The wrist measurement is taken at the narrowest point, distal to the wrist bones (styloid processes), without compressing the skin.
Limitations
- This is a rough heuristic, not a clinical measurement of bone density or skeletal mass — DEXA scanning is the accurate method if precision matters.
- Frame-size categories are a simplification; individual skeletal proportions vary continuously, not in three discrete bins.
Common questions
Why does frame size matter for weight goals?
Height-only "ideal weight" charts assume an average skeletal build. Someone with a genuinely large frame will typically sit heavier than a small-framed person of identical height and body fat percentage, simply because they carry more bone and structural tissue — frame size is a way to adjust for that rather than treating everyone at a given height identically.
Is this the same as a "body type" like ectomorph or mesomorph?
