The fertile window extends 5 days before ovulation (the outer limit of sperm survival) through about 1 day after (the egg's viable window), giving roughly a 6-day window each cycle.
Worked example
Last period 1 July 2026, 28-day cycle, 14-day luteal phase

The two phases of a menstrual cycle
A menstrual cycle divides into two phases around ovulation. The first, the follicular phase, runs from the start of a period until an egg is released and varies noticeably in length from person to person — and from cycle to cycle in the same person. The second, the luteal phase, runs from ovulation to the start of the next period and is driven by a short-lived hormone-producing structure left behind after the egg is released; it is far more consistent in length, typically staying within a narrow window for a given individual across many cycles.
Because the luteal phase is the more predictable of the two, working backward from the next expected period — rather than counting forward from the last one — is the more reliable way to estimate when ovulation is likely to have happened.
What happens at ovulation
Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from an ovary, triggered by a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) roughly midway through a typical cycle. It happens once per cycle under normal circumstances, and is the event that determines whether that cycle can result in pregnancy.
Why the fertile window opens before ovulation
The days when conception is possible extend beyond the day of ovulation itself. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to about five days under favorable conditions, so intercourse in the days leading up to ovulation can still result in conception once the egg is released. The egg itself, once released, is viable for roughly 24 hours. Combined, this produces a fertile window of about six days each cycle — several days before ovulation through a day or so afterward.
Other ways ovulation timing is tracked
Calendar-based estimates like this one work from averages and are most useful for reasonably regular cycles. Several other methods observe more direct, cycle-specific signals:
- Ovulation predictor kits — urine test strips that detect the LH surge directly, typically giving one to two days’ notice before ovulation.
- Basal body temperature charting — a small, sustained rise in resting body temperature after ovulation, caused by the hormone progesterone — useful for confirming ovulation happened, after the fact, rather than predicting it in advance.
- Cervical mucus changes — natural changes in consistency across the cycle that many people learn to track as one signal among several.
What this assumes, and where it stops
Assumptions
- Cycles are reasonably regular — this is a statistical estimate, not a measurement of a specific cycle.
Limitations
- Cannot detect the actual ovulation event — ovulation predictor kits (which detect the LH surge) or basal body temperature tracking are more precise for a specific cycle.
- Irregular cycles, recent hormonal contraception use, or conditions like PCOS make calendar-based prediction substantially less reliable.

Why does the fertile window start before ovulation?
Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to about 5 days, so intercourse in the days before ovulation can still result in conception once the egg is released. The egg itself is only viable for about 24 hours after ovulation, which is why the window closes quickly afterward.
How do I find my actual luteal phase length?
Track ovulation directly for a cycle or two — using an ovulation predictor kit or basal body temperature charting — and count the days from confirmed ovulation to the start of your next period. Most people's luteal phase is consistent cycle to cycle, even when the rest of the cycle length varies.
