How the calculation works
WHtR = waist circumference ÷ height- Waist
- Circumference at the narrowest point of the torso

The ratio is unitless, so centimetres and inches both work provided both measurements use the same one.
A ratio of 0.5 is simply "waist equals half your height", which is why the rule is memorable without any calculation at all.
Unlike waist-to-hip ratio, the 0.5 boundary is sex-neutral, and it adjusts automatically for height — a 60 cm waist means something different on a 150 cm frame than on a 190 cm one.
Worked example
An 85 cm waist at 175 cm tall
- 1.Ratio: 85 ÷ 175 = 0.4857.
- 2.Half of 175 cm is 87.5 cm, and the waist is 85 cm — 2.5 cm below that boundary.
- 3.A ratio between 0.4 and 0.5 falls in the healthy range.
Result: 0.486 — healthy range, 2.5 cm below the boundary
One threshold, no table
Waist-to-height ratio has a practical advantage over almost every other body metric: the main boundary is 0.5, it applies to everyone regardless of sex, and it can be checked without any arithmetic at all — keep your waist under half your height. A piece of string cut to your height, folded in half, and wrapped around your waist gives the same answer as this calculator.
That simplicity is not a shortcut at the expense of usefulness. Because it scales waist circumference by height, it automatically adjusts for body size in a way that raw waist circumference does not: a 90 cm waist means something quite different on a 155 cm frame than on a 195 cm one.
How it compares to BMI and waist-to-hip
Each of the three common measures captures something the others miss.
- BMI — total mass relative to height. Says nothing about where mass sits, and cannot distinguish muscle from fat.
- Waist-to-hip ratio — fat distribution between abdomen and hips. Sex-specific thresholds, and it can move for reasons unrelated to abdominal fat, since shrinking hips raises it.
- Waist-to-height ratio — abdominal fat scaled to body size. One sex-neutral threshold, and it responds directly to abdominal fat change rather than to the balance between two body regions.
What it still cannot do
Like every tape-measure metric, waist-to-height ratio cannot see inside. It cannot separate visceral fat, which packs around the organs and carries most of the metabolic risk, from subcutaneous fat sitting just under the skin — only imaging can do that. It also does not account for muscle: a very lean, heavily built athlete can have a thicker waist than their body fat alone would suggest.
It is a screening indicator meant to prompt a conversation, not a diagnosis. Its value is being quick, needing no equipment beyond a tape measure, and being hard to get wrong.
What this assumes, and where it stops
Assumptions
- Waist and height are measured in the same unit, with the tape horizontal and snug but not compressing.
- The 0.5 boundary is applied as a general adult guideline. Some research proposes slightly lower boundaries for certain populations.
Limitations
- Cannot distinguish visceral from subcutaneous fat, which is the distinction that drives most of the metabolic risk.
- Not validated for children under 5, or during pregnancy.
- Very muscular builds can read higher than their body fat warrants.
- A screening indicator only, not a diagnosis.
Common questions
Is "keep your waist under half your height" really the whole rule?
Essentially, yes — that is exactly what a ratio below 0.5 means. It is one of the few health guidelines that needs no calculation, no table and no adjustment for sex, which is a large part of why it has gained ground as a simple screening measure.
Why might this be preferred over waist-to-hip ratio?
Three reasons: one threshold instead of sex-specific ones, automatic adjustment for body size, and a more direct response to change. Waist-to-hip ratio can rise when someone loses hip and thigh mass even if their abdomen is unchanged, which makes it awkward to track over time; waist-to-height does not have that problem.
