How to use this calculator

  1. 1Start from the number of birds you actually want, then check whether the space carries them — not the other way round.
  2. 2Size the run first. It is the larger requirement and the one that decides how many birds a garden can reasonably hold.
  3. 3Enter what you have or plan to build to see whether it matches, and which of the two is the binding constraint.
  4. 4Take the ventilation figure seriously and put it high in the coop, above roost height, permanently open. Do not insulate a coop shut.
  5. 5Look at the cost-per-dozen table before buying anything, and read the third row rather than the first.
  6. 6Check your local rules before starting. Many municipalities cap flock size, most ban roosters, and some require setbacks from property lines.

Space figures assume birds have access to a run. A flock confined to the coop alone needs closer to 10 square feet each, which is why commercial free-range standards are written that way.

Feed intake rises in cold weather and falls slightly in heat, while water consumption roughly doubles in sustained heat.

Egg figures average across the year, including the autumn moult and the winter drop-off, and describe a hen in her first two laying seasons.

Worked example

Six light-breed hens in a fixed run, temperate climate

  1. 1.Coop: 6 hens × 3 sq ft = 18 sq ft — a 3 × 6 ft henhouse.
  2. 2.Run: 6 × 8 = 48 sq ft, which is 2.7 times the coop. This is the number people build too small.
  3. 3.Roost: 6 × 10 = 60 inches of bar, so a single 5 ft perch.
  4. 4.Nest boxes: 6 ÷ 4 rounds up to 2. They will all use one of them anyway.
  5. 5.Ventilation: 18 ÷ 10 = 1.8 sq ft of permanent high opening, left open through winter.
  6. 6.Feed: 6 × 0.25 lb = 1.5 lb a day, 548 lb a year — 11 bags at $30, so $329.
  7. 7.Water: 6 pints a day, about 0.75 gallons.
  8. 8.Eggs: 6 × 280 = 1,680 a year, or 140 dozen.
  9. 9.Feed alone is $329 ÷ 140 = $2.35 a dozen, which beats the $3.50 shop price.
  10. 10.Add $60 of bedding and $120 a year of coop (a $1,200 setup over ten years) and the all-in figure is $509 a year, or $3.63 a dozen — slightly more than buying them.

The same six birds free ranging most of the day, in a hot climate

  1. 1.The coop requirement is unchanged at 18 sq ft — they still all sleep indoors.
  2. 2.The run halves to 24 sq ft, because the birds spend most of the day out of it.
  3. 3.Feed drops twice over: hot-climate birds eat about 5% less, and foraging supplies roughly 18% of the diet in the growing season.
  4. 4.Feed = 6 × 0.25 × 0.95 × 0.82 × 365 = 427 lb a year, 8.5 bags, $256.
  5. 5.Water is the figure that moves the other way, and dramatically: consumption doubles in sustained heat, to 12 pints or 1.5 gallons a day.
  6. 6.That is the thing to plan for — heat kills far more backyard hens than cold, and a drinker that runs dry on a 95°F afternoon can lose a bird by evening.
  7. 7.With a cheaper $600 coop over ten years, the all-in cost falls to $376 a year, or $2.69 a dozen — now comfortably under the shop.
  8. 8.The forage credit is honest in summer and optimistic in January, so treat the annual feed figure as a good year rather than a floor.

Result: $2.69 a dozen free ranging — and double the water, which is the real hot-climate risk

The run, not the coop

Coop space per bird is quoted in every guide and almost everyone provides it. The run is quoted less often, needs two to three times as much area, and is routinely built to whatever space happens to be left over.

The standard figures are three to four square feet of coop and eight to ten square feet of run for a standard-size hen. The coop is where they sleep and lay; the run is where they spend their waking hours, and a bird that cannot get away from another bird in it has nowhere to go.

What crowding produces is behavioural and it is difficult to reverse. Feather-pecking starts, then bare backs and bleeding, and a flock that has learned to peck will keep doing it even after the space is fixed. Bullying concentrates on one or two birds. And the ground itself fails: a crowded run loses its vegetation in days, turns to bare earth, then to mud, and mud is where coccidiosis and intestinal worms live.

The practical consequence is that the run should be sized first, because it decides how many birds a given garden can carry. A 48 square foot run holds six light hens properly and four heavy ones. Deep litter — a thick layer of wood chip that composts in place — keeps a run workable at the smaller end of the range, and is the single best investment in a fixed run.

Ventilation is not draught, and humidity is the enemy

The instinct in a cold climate is to seal and insulate the coop. It is the wrong instinct and it causes the problem it is meant to prevent.

Hens carry a down jacket and a body temperature of 105°F. Cold, in itself, is something a healthy adult hen handles remarkably well — flocks winter outdoors across Canada and the northern states without heat. What they handle badly is moisture.

A coop full of hens produces a great deal of water. They exhale it, and their droppings are roughly three quarters water. In a sealed coop that moisture has nowhere to go, so humidity climbs, and it condenses on the coldest surfaces available — which include combs and wattles. Frostbite in a closed coop is far more common than frostbite in an airy one, and it is a humidity injury rather than a cold one.

The answer is permanent ventilation at roughly a tenth of the floor area, placed high — above roost height, so damp air leaves without wind blowing across sleeping birds. That is the distinction between ventilation and draught, and it is the whole of it. Vents stay open in winter.

Heating a coop is worse than useless in most climates. It stops the birds acclimatising, so a power cut on the coldest night of the year exposes a flock with no cold tolerance to it. Heat lamps are also a leading cause of coop fires. The genuinely useful winter purchase is a heated drinker base, because a hen that cannot drink stops eating and stops laying within a day.

Feed, water and what actually gets eaten

A standard laying hen eats about a quarter of a pound of feed a day — roughly a 50 lb bag per hen per seven months. Bantams eat about half that, heavy dual-purpose breeds about a third more.

  • Layer feedfrom point of lay onward: about 16% protein and, critically, 4% calcium for shell formation. Never feed layer ration to chicks or non-laying birds — that calcium level damages young kidneys.
  • Gritbirds without access to soil need insoluble grit to grind food in the gizzard. Free-ranging birds find their own. It is not the same thing as oyster shell.
  • Oyster shelloffered separately, not mixed in, so hens take what they need. A hen laying well pulls a remarkable amount of calcium out of herself, and thin shells are the first sign she is short.
  • Scraps and treatsfine in moderation, and they dilute a balanced ration if overdone. The usual guidance is under 10% of the diet. Avoid anything mouldy, salty, or from the onion and avocado families.
  • Watermore important than feed and more often neglected. A hen drinks about a pint a day and twice that in heat, and stops laying almost immediately without it. In winter the problem is freezing; in summer it is running dry.
  • Foraginga genuinely free-ranging flock finds 10 to 20% of its diet in the growing season — insects, greens, seeds. In winter that falls to near zero, so do not budget the annual feed bill on summer consumption.

The eggs are not cheaper, and that is fine

It is worth being straightforward about the economics, because the guides are usually not.

Feed alone is competitive. Six hens eating 550 pounds a year at $30 a bag costs about $330 and produces perhaps 140 dozen eggs, which is $2.35 a dozen — comfortably under most shop prices for eggs of that quality.

The rest is where it goes. A ready-made coop for six hens is $600 to $2,000. Bedding, grit and oyster shell run $50 to $100 a year. Birds cost $5 to $25 each and lay well for two or three seasons. Fencing that actually excludes a fox is not cheap. Spread over a realistic life, the all-in figure typically lands between $3.50 and $5 a dozen — at or above what the shop charges.

Then there is time. Hens need letting out and shutting in daily, feeding, watering, and their coop cleaning. It is not onerous, and it is not zero, and it does not stop for holidays.

None of which is an argument against keeping them. The eggs are better than anything sold, the manure is the best thing that can happen to a compost heap, hens deal with kitchen scraps and garden pests with enthusiasm, and they are genuinely good company. Those are the reasons that hold up. Saving money is not one, and going in expecting it to be is how people end up disappointed by an otherwise excellent decision.

One last practicality: check the local rules first. Many municipalities cap flock size, the great majority ban roosters, and some require setbacks from boundaries or a permit. Finding out afterwards is a bad way to find out.

What this assumes, and where it stops

Assumptions

  • Space figures assume birds have both a coop and a run; a flock confined to the coop alone needs closer to 10 sq ft each.
  • Feed intake is 0.12, 0.25 and 0.33 lb per bird per day for bantam, light standard and heavy standard breeds.
  • Cold climates raise feed intake about 15%; hot climates lower it slightly and roughly double water consumption.
  • Free ranging is credited with 18% of the diet and part-ranging with 8%, which is realistic in the growing season and optimistic in winter.
  • Egg figures average the whole year including the autumn moult and winter drop-off, for hens in their first two laying seasons.

Limitations

  • Breeds vary widely within each size class, and individual hens vary more. Published laying figures are for good birds in good conditions.
  • Laying falls substantially after the second season, and the calculation does not model a flock ageing or being replaced.
  • Predation is not costed and it is the largest single risk to a backyard flock. Fencing that genuinely excludes foxes, raccoons and hawks costs real money.
  • Veterinary costs, mite and worm treatment, and the value of labour are all excluded.
  • Local ordinances on flock size, roosters, setbacks and permits vary enormously and are not checked here.

Common questions

How much space do chickens need?

Three to four square feet of coop floor and eight to ten square feet of run per standard-size bird, with bantams needing about two thirds of that. The run is the larger requirement and the one most often undersized — crowding there is what causes feather-pecking, bullying and the mud that harbours parasites.

How many nest boxes do I need?

One per four hens, with a minimum of two. Building more does not help, because they will all queue for the same favourite box regardless. Twelve inches square suits a standard hen; larger boxes encourage two birds at once and broken eggs.

How much feed does a chicken eat?

About a quarter of a pound a day for a standard laying hen — roughly a 50 lb bag per hen per seven months. Bantams eat about half that and heavy breeds about a third more. How many eggs will my hens lay?

A good light production breed averages around 280 a year in her first two seasons, a heavy dual-purpose bird about 220, and a bantam about 150. Those averages already include the six-to-twelve-week autumn moult when laying stops entirely and the winter drop-off caused by short days. Expect five or six a week per hen in spring and close to nothing in November.
