How to use this calculator
- 1Measure the area actually being seeded. For patch repair, measure the patches — seeding a whole lawn to fix a quarter of it is a common and expensive mistake.
- 2Identify the species you are buying rather than the brand. The rate is a property of the species and it varies sixteen-fold.
- 3Read the pure live seed figure off the tag — purity times germination — and enter it. Cheap seed is cheap because it contains less of what you want.
- 4Choose the purpose honestly. Overseeding at the new-lawn rate wastes money and produces a worse lawn.
- 5Prepare for seed-to-soil contact before worrying about quantity. Aerate or scarify, mow short, remove clippings; seed lying on thatch does nothing.
- 6Water lightly two or three times a day through the germination window, then shift to deeper and less frequent once the grass is up.

Published rates assume a reasonable seed tag. Scaling by pure live seed keeps the number of viable seeds on the ground constant regardless of bag quality.
Overseeding at the full new-lawn rate is a common and counterproductive error — the seedlings compete with each other and with the existing turf.
Seeds per pound are typical figures and vary between cultivars, and burs or coated seed change them substantially.
Worked example
Overseeding a 5,000 sq ft tall fescue lawn in early autumn
- 1.Tall fescue overseeds at 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft against 8 lb for a new lawn.
- 2.The bag is 85% pure live seed, which is what the published rates assume, so no adjustment is needed.
- 3.Seed needed = 5 × 5 = 25 lb.
- 4.That is 1.25 bags of 20 lb, about $87.50, and one bag covers 4,000 sq ft.
- 5.Seed count: 5 lb × 227,000 seeds per pound = 1,135,000 seeds per 1,000 sq ft, which is 1,135 per square foot or 7.9 per square inch.
- 6.Seeding the same lawn from bare soil would take 40 lb — 60% more — and using that rate to overseed would put nearly thirteen seeds per square inch onto ground already occupied by grass.

The same lawn, but centipedegrass in the south
- 1.Centipedegrass establishes at 0.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft — the lowest rate of any turf grass.
- 2.Seed needed = 0.5 × 5 = 2.5 lb for the whole 5,000 sq ft lawn.
- 3.That is an eighth of a 20 lb bag, against the 40 lb the same lawn would need in tall fescue: a sixteen-fold difference.
- 4.Seed count: 0.5 lb × 400,000 = 200,000 seeds per 1,000 sq ft, or 1.4 per square inch — deliberately sparse, because centipede spreads by stolons and fills in.
- 5.This is the species people most reliably over-seed. Ten times the rate produces a thick stand that then thins itself out and wastes most of the seed.
- 6.Being a warm-season grass, it goes in once soil is reliably above 65°F, and it needs the whole summer to establish.
Result: 2.5 lb for the whole lawn — a sixteenth of what fescue would take
Why there is no single seeding rate
Ask how much grass seed a lawn needs and the answer varies by a factor of sixteen depending on nothing but the species. That is not vagueness; it is a real physical difference.
A pound of Kentucky bluegrass seed contains about 2.2 million seeds. A pound of tall fescue contains about 227,000. Bluegrass seed is roughly a tenth the size, and the plant it produces is smaller and spreads by underground rhizomes, so far fewer pounds are needed to cover the same ground. Tall fescue is a bunch grass — each seed produces one clump that never moves — so the stand has to be established at the density you want it to stay at.
Centipedegrass takes this to its extreme at half a pound per 1,000 square feet, which people routinely exceed by a factor of ten because it seems impossibly small. Buffalograss goes the other way: it is sold as burs containing several seeds each, so a pound contains only 50,000 units and the rate looks high.
The practical consequence is that any seeding advice has to name a species before it means anything, and the number on a generic bag of "lawn seed" is a rate for whatever mixture happens to be in it.
Overseeding is not seeding, and more is worse
Overseeding — sowing into existing turf to thicken it — takes roughly 60% of the new-lawn rate, and the temptation to use the full rate produces a measurably worse lawn.
The reason is competition. On bare soil every seed has access to light, water and space, and the rate is calculated to produce a stand at the density you want. In existing turf, most of that space is already taken. Seedlings germinating into an occupied sward are competing with mature plants that have established root systems and with each other, and the result at a full rate is a mat of thin, weak seedlings that mostly die in the first hot or dry spell.
What actually determines overseeding success is not the quantity but the contact. Seed sitting on thatch or on hard ground germinates and dies, because the root never reaches soil. Core aerating, scarifying, mowing short and removing the clippings all do more for the outcome than any adjustment to the rate — and on a badly thatched lawn, none of the seed will work until the thatch is dealt with.
Patch repair is a third case and it uses the full new-lawn rate, because a bare patch is bare soil. Measure the patches rather than the lawn.
Autumn, and why spring is second best
For cool-season grasses — fescue, bluegrass, ryegrass — late summer into early autumn is the best seeding window of the year, and it beats spring by a wide margin.
Three things line up. The soil is still warm from summer, so germination is fast. The air is cooling, so seedlings are not fighting heat stress while they have no root system. And the annual weeds that dominate spring — crabgrass above all — have finished their cycle, so a seedling is not competing with them for the same bare ground.
Spring seeding inverts all three. Germination is slower in cold soil, the seedlings go into summer with a root system a few weeks old, and crabgrass germinates in exactly the same conditions that suit the grass. It also rules out pre-emergent crabgrass control, since a pre-emergent cannot distinguish between crabgrass and lawn seed.
The practical rule is to seed with about six weeks of growing weather left before the first hard frost. Later than that and the seedlings go into winter too small to survive it. Much earlier and summer heat is still a problem.
Warm-season grasses run on the opposite schedule, and on soil temperature rather than the calendar: seed once soil is reliably above 65°F, in late spring to early summer, so the plants have the full season to establish before their first winter.
Reading the tag, which is the only honest comparison
Grass seed is sold by weight and bought by hope, and the seed tag is the one document that lets two bags be compared.
Purity is the percentage by weight that is actually the named species. Germination is the percentage of that seed that will grow, from a test whose date is printed alongside. Multiply them and you have pure live seed, which is what you are really buying: a bag at 95% purity and 85% germination is 81% pure live seed, and a fifth of its weight is doing nothing.
Below those two lines are the ones worth reading before anything else. "Other crop seed" is agricultural seed that is not what you bought — under 0.5% is normal, and more indicates a cheap bag. "Weed seed" should be under 0.5%, which still amounts to thousands of seeds. And "noxious weeds" should read "none found"; anything else means the bag contains a species the state regulates, and no price makes that worth spreading on a lawn.
Germination falls with age, so a tag test date more than a year old is worth discounting. Seed stored cool and dry keeps reasonably well; seed that spent a summer in a garage does not.
What this assumes, and where it stops

Limitations
- Cultivars within a species vary in seed size and vigour, so rates and seed counts are approximate.
- Coated, pelleted and mulch-blended seed products contain substantially less actual seed per pound than the figures here.
- Seed-to-soil contact, watering and thatch affect establishment more than the rate does, and none of them appear in this calculation.
- Mixtures — most bagged lawn seed is a blend — have a rate somewhere between their components, weighted by proportion, which this page does not compute.
- Regional seeding windows vary considerably. The guidance here is by grass season type, not by your specific frost dates.

How much grass seed do I need per 1,000 square feet?
It depends entirely on the species, and the span is sixteen-fold. Tall fescue and perennial ryegrass take about 8 lb per 1,000 sq ft for a new lawn, Kentucky bluegrass 2 lb, and centipedegrass just 0.5 lb. Overseeding takes roughly 60% of those figures. Any answer that does not start with the species is guessing.
How much seed for overseeding versus a new lawn?

Purity multiplied by germination, both printed on the seed tag. A bag at 95% purity and 85% germination is 81% pure live seed, so a fifth of its weight is inert matter, chaff or seed that will not grow. It is the only fair way to compare two bags, and cheap seed is usually cheap because this number is low.
Can I just put down more seed to get a thicker lawn?
No — beyond the recommended rate, extra seed produces more seedlings sharing the same water and light, and they self-thin into a weaker stand than the correct rate would have given. Thickness comes from seed-to-soil contact, consistent moisture through germination, and choosing a species that spreads. Quantity is the least useful lever available.
How long does grass seed take to germinate?
Five to ten days for perennial ryegrass, seven to fourteen for tall fescue and fine fescue, and fourteen to twenty-eight for Kentucky bluegrass and most warm-season grasses. The top half inch of soil must stay continuously moist for the whole window, which means light watering two or three times a day — a seed that germinates and then dries out is dead, not dormant.
