The gap belongs in the divisor. Each board occupies its own width plus the gap that follows it, so a 5.5 in board with a 3/16 in gap repeats every 5.6875 in. Dividing by 5.5 alone overstates the row count by about 3%, and on a wide deck that is several boards.

Board width means the *actual* width. A nominal 2×6 or 5/4×6 deck board is 5.5 in wide, not 6. Using the nominal figure undercounts rows by 8%.

Pieces per row rounds up, because a row longer than a stock board is butted. The offcut from the last piece in each row is usually too short to be useful elsewhere, which is part of why a 10% waste allowance is normal.

Joist count is a fencepost problem: joists sit at both ends of the deck as well as between, so a 16 ft deck at 16 in centres takes 13 joists, not 12.

Worked example

A 16 × 12 ft deck in 5/4 × 6 boards

  1. 1.A 5/4 × 6 board is 5.5 in actually wide. With a 3/16 in gap each row takes 5.6875 in.
  2. 2.Rows: 12 ft × 12 = 144 in ÷ 5.6875 = 25.3, rounded up to 26 rows.
  3. 3.The 16 ft run matches the 16 ft stock length exactly, so each row is one board and there are no butt joints.
  4. 4.Boards before waste: 26. Add 10%: 26 × 1.10 = 28.6, rounded up to 29 boards.
  5. 5.Joists at 16 in centres: 16 × 12 ÷ 16 = 12 bays, plus 1 = 13 joists.
  6. 6.Screws: 26 rows × 13 joists × 2 = 676.

Result: 29 boards, 13 joists, 676 screws

The same deck built from 12 ft stock, which forces butt joints

  1. 1.Rows are unchanged at 26 — the board width and gap did not change.
  2. 2.But a 16 ft run needs 2 pieces from 12 ft stock, so each row has 1 butt joint: 26 joints in total.
  3. 3.Boards: 26 rows × 2 pieces = 52, plus 10% waste = 58 boards.
  4. 4.Each row leaves 2 × 12 − 16 = 8 ft of offcut, and 26 rows means over 200 ft of it.
  5. 5.Twice as many boards for the same deck. Cheaper stock rarely wins once the offcuts are counted.

Nominal and actual: the 8% error

Lumber is sold by nominal size and delivered at actual size. A "2×6" leaves the mill at 2 × 6 in green and rough, then dries and is planed to 1.5 × 5.5 in. A "5/4×6" deck board is 1 × 5.5 in. The nominal figure survives only as a name.

Half an inch on a 6 in board is 8%, and on a 12 ft wide deck that is the difference between 25 rows and 26. Every dimension in this calculator is actual, measured width — if you are entering a custom profile, measure a board rather than reading the label.

Why the gap goes in the divisor

Boards are laid with a gap between them for drainage and for the wood to move. The gap is not decorative: without it, water sits on the joint, debris packs in, and boards that swell have nowhere to go but up.

The counting consequence is that each board occupies its own width *plus* one gap — the gap that follows it. So the repeat is 5.5 + 0.1875 = 5.6875 in, and that is what the deck width divides by. Dividing by the board width alone overstates the row count, which is the friendlier direction to be wrong in but still wrong.

How big the gap should be depends on the timber. Kiln-dried wood is laid at 3/16 in because it will barely move. Wet pressure-treated stock is often laid tight, because it shrinks as it dries and opens its own gap — lay wet stock with a 3/16 in gap and you may end up with 3/8 in. Composite decking follows the manufacturer, and its gaps are usually larger to allow for thermal movement.

Butt joints, and why stock length is a design decision

If the deck is longer than the boards, every row has to be made from two or more pieces meeting end to end. That joint must land on a joist — half a board end cantilevered in mid-air will move, cup and eventually fail — which sometimes means adding blocking.

Butt joints also waste material. A 16 ft run from 12 ft stock takes two boards and leaves 8 ft over, and that offcut is rarely long enough to be the second piece of another row. Buying 16 ft stock for a 16 ft deck halves the board count outright.

Where joints are unavoidable, stagger them. Rows of joints lined up across the deck read as a seam and draw the eye; scattering them across different joists makes them nearly invisible.

What a deck actually costs, and it is not the boards

The surface is the visible part and the small part. Under it sit beams sized for the span, posts, concrete footings below the frost line, a ledger bolted and flashed to the house, joist hangers, and often railings and stairs — each of which is its own calculation.

The ledger connection deserves particular mention: it is the single most common cause of catastrophic deck failure, and the failures are almost always either fastening (nails instead of through-bolts or structural screws) or flashing (water tracking behind the ledger and rotting the rim joist).

Joist spacing is a structural matter too. A 5/4 board wants joists at 16 in; many composite boards need 12 in, and diagonal decking needs the spacing reduced because the board crosses joists at an angle and spans further between them.

What this assumes, and where it stops

Assumptions

  • A rectangular deck with boards running parallel to the length dimension.
  • Board widths are actual, planed dimensions, not nominal sizes.
  • Two fasteners per board at every joist crossing, with an extra pair at each butt joint.
  • Joists run perpendicular to the boards and are counted at both ends of the deck as well as between.

Limitations

  • Rectangular decks only. Angled, curved, multi-level or wrapped decks need each section estimated separately, with more waste.
  • Diagonal or herringbone board patterns are not modelled. They use roughly 15% more material and need closer joist spacing, because a board crossing joists at 45° spans further between them.
  • Framing output is joists only. Beams, posts, footings, ledger, flashing, joist hangers, railings, stairs and blocking are not included, and they are the majority of a deck.
  • Not a structural design. Joist size, beam span and footing depth depend on loads, species and local code.

Common questions

How many deck boards do I need?

Divide the deck width by the board width plus the gap, and round up — that is the number of rows. Then multiply by how many boards each row needs end to end, and add about 10% for waste. A 16 × 12 ft deck in 5/4 × 6 boards with a 3/16 inch gap comes to 26 rows, or 29 boards with waste.

What gap should I leave between deck boards?

About 3/16 inch for kiln-dried wood or composite. Wet pressure-treated lumber is often laid tight, because it shrinks as it dries and opens its own gap — laying wet stock with a gap can leave you with 3/8 inch. The gap exists for drainage and movement, not appearance, so never omit it with dry material.

How far apart should deck joists be?

Sixteen inches on centre suits most 5/4 and 2× decking laid perpendicular to the joists. Many composite boards require 12 inches, and boards laid diagonally need the spacing reduced because they span further between joists at an angle. Check the decking manufacturer's span table, and local code for the joists themselves.

Is a 2×6 deck board really 6 inches wide?

No. It is 5.5 inches. Nominal lumber sizes describe the rough green dimension before drying and planing, so a 2×6 finishes at 1.5 × 5.5 inches and a 5/4×6 deck board at 1 × 5.5 inches. Using 6 inches in a takeoff undercounts the rows by about 8%.
