How the calculation works
wpm = words ÷ minutes. Effective wpm = wpm × comprehension. Time = words ÷ wpm- wpm

Effective reading speed exists because raw pace alone is easy to game — skipping words raises wpm while lowering how much you take in. Multiplying by comprehension is the standard correction, and it is what makes speed-reading claims testable.
Word counts for books are estimates. Publishers report page counts, and words per page varies with trim size, font and leading — 250 to 350 is the usual range for a paperback, but a dense academic text can exceed 500.
Worked example
1,200 words read in 5 minutes
- 1.Reading speed: 1,200 ÷ 5 = 240 words per minute.
- 2.That falls in the typical adult range, which is most often cited as roughly 200–300 wpm for general prose.
- 3.Per hour: 240 × 60 = 14,400 words.
- 4.A 90,000-word novel would take 90,000 ÷ 240 = 375 minutes, or 6 hours 15 minutes of continuous reading.

What reading speed actually measures
Words per minute is a simple ratio, but it describes something less stable than people expect. The same reader can manage 400 wpm on a familiar novel and 120 wpm on an unfamiliar technical paper, and neither figure is more "their" reading speed than the other. Reading speed is a property of the reader and the text together, which is why any single number should be treated as a measurement of one particular session rather than a fixed personal attribute.
The commonly cited adult range for general prose sits somewhere around 200–300 words per minute. Figures vary between studies depending on text difficulty and whether comprehension was tested at all, which is why the bands here are deliberately broad.
Why comprehension has to be part of the measure
Raw speed is trivially easy to inflate: read every third word and your wpm doubles. This is why reading research uses effective reading rate — pace multiplied by comprehension — rather than pace alone. A reader at 600 wpm with 40% comprehension has an effective rate of 240 wpm, identical to someone reading carefully at 240 wpm with full understanding, and has gained nothing but the feeling of speed.
This is also the main reason claims about speed-reading techniques are contested. Studies that test comprehension alongside speed generally find that gains beyond a certain point come from skimming — selectively sampling the text — rather than from reading faster. Skimming is a genuinely useful skill for deciding what deserves a careful read, but it is a different activity, not an accelerated version of the same one.
Subvocalisation and the ceiling
Most people silently pronounce words as they read, an internal voice known as subvocalisation. Speed-reading programmes often target it, on the reasoning that it caps reading at roughly speaking pace. The counter-argument from reading research is that subvocalisation is bound up with how comprehension works for many readers, particularly on difficult material, and suppressing it tends to cost understanding.
There is also a hard physical limit: the eye can only take in a few words per fixation, and fixations take time. That places a practical ceiling on genuine word-by-word reading somewhere in the several-hundred-wpm range, regardless of technique.
Improving reading throughput
The reliable gains come less from raw pace than from reading strategically.
- 1Match the technique to the purpose — skim to decide whether something is worth reading, scan to find a specific fact, and read carefully only what warrants it. Most wasted reading time is spent reading things carefully that did not need it.
- 2Build subject familiarity — reading speed rises sharply as vocabulary and background knowledge in a field grow, because fewer words require conscious decoding. This is the single largest genuine effect.
- 3Reduce regression — unnecessary re-reading of the previous line is a common habit that costs real time without aiding comprehension. Using a finger or cursor as a pacer helps some readers break it.
- 4Read more — unglamorous but well supported — reading volume improves both speed and comprehension over time, largely through the familiarity effect above.

- Does not distinguish reading from skimming or scanning, which are different activities with different appropriate speeds.
