- How is reading time calculated?
- At 238 words per minute — the average adult silent-reading speed from Brysbaert’s 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies. Speaking time uses 130 wpm, the standard speechwriting planning figure. Both are averages: technical material reads slower, familiar material faster.
- What counts as a word?
- A run of letters or digits, including internal apostrophes and hyphens — so "don’t" and "state-of-the-art" each count once, in any language your keyboard can produce. Sentence counting looks for . ! and ? endings; abbreviations like "Dr." can fool any automatic counter, so treat that figure as close rather than exact.
- Is my text uploaded anywhere?
- No. Everything is counted by this page in your browser — which matters, because what people paste into a word counter is usually unpublished writing. Close the tab and it is gone.
- How many words is a 5-minute speech?
- About 650 words at the 130 words-per-minute planning rate this tool uses — so roughly 260 for two minutes, 1,300 for ten, 2,600 for twenty. Paste your draft and the speaking-time figure does this arithmetic for you, including pauses you should probably leave room for by aiming a little under.
- How many pages is 1,000 words?
- Roughly two pages double-spaced or one page single-spaced in a standard 12-point font with normal margins — the convention essays and manuscripts are judged by. Word count is the honest measure, which is why assignments state limits in words, not pages.
- What is the character limit for a tweet, a meta description and an SMS?
- X/Twitter allows 280 characters. Meta descriptions are not hard-limited, but Google truncates around 155–160 characters, so that is the practical ceiling this tool checks against. A single SMS is 160 characters (70 if it contains any non-Latin character). The limit checks turn red the moment your text stops fitting.
- What is keyword density, and what should it be?
- The share of your text a given word represents — this tool lists your most frequent words with their percentages, ignoring common stop-words. There is no magic number: density is useful for noticing accidental repetition or a page that never actually uses the phrase it hopes to rank for, not as a target to inflate. Write for readers; use the list as a mirror.
