How the calculation works

Height is highly heritable but not purely genetic — nutrition, health during childhood, and other environmental factors also influence final adult height, which is exactly why the method gives a range rather than a single number.
Worked example
Father 180 cm, mother 165 cm, boy

What mid-parental height estimates
A child’s eventual adult height is strongly shaped by inherited genetics, but it is not fixed by any single gene or rule — it emerges from the combined, small effect of many genes plus the child’s own health and nutrition while growing. The mid-parental height method leans on a well-documented population pattern: averaged across many families, a child’s adult height correlates fairly closely with the average of both parents’ heights. This calculator turns that correlation into a single reference figure — the height a child of a given sex would be expected to reach on average, given these two parents — rather than measuring the child directly.
Where the method comes from
Mid-parental height, sometimes called "target height," has been used in pediatric growth assessment for decades as a quick, low-cost benchmark. Unlike a growth chart, it needs no measurement of the child at all — only the two parents’ adult heights and the child’s sex — which is why it is often calculated early, sometimes even before birth, purely as a rough point of comparison rather than a diagnostic tool.
Why genetics alone does not decide the outcome
Height is among the most heritable traits studied in humans, but heritability is a population-level statistic, not a guarantee for any one child. A number of other influences act alongside genetics over the growing years:
- Nutrition — adequate calories, protein and micronutrients — including during infancy and adolescent growth spurts — support reaching a child’s genetic potential; sustained undernutrition can suppress it.
- Chronic health conditions — illnesses affecting hormones, the digestive system or general health during childhood can slow growth, independent of parental height.
- Puberty timing — the age at which growth spurts and puberty occur shifts the growth curve, though it usually evens out by adulthood.
- General health and environment — sleep, activity and overall wellbeing all play smaller supporting roles across childhood.
How this compares to clinical growth tracking
Pediatricians monitor growth quite differently in practice: they plot repeated height measurements over months and years on standardized growth charts and watch the percentile curve a child follows over time. A child tracking steadily along roughly the same percentile is generally viewed as growing consistently, regardless of exactly where that percentile sits, while a child’s curve crossing several percentile lines is often what prompts closer attention. Mid-parental height works best as a single rough anchor to compare that ongoing chart against — a starting expectation, not a substitute for tracking a specific child’s own growth over time.

Common questions
How accurate is this method?
It correlates reasonably well with actual adult height at a population level — most children do land within the stated range — but any individual child can fall outside it. It is best used as a rough benchmark, not a precise forecast, and a pediatrician tracking a child's own growth curve over time has much more specific information to work from.
Why does the formula add or subtract 13 cm by sex?
Because it is estimating each child's expected height relative to a parental average that mixes one adult male and one adult female height — adjusting by roughly half the typical male-female adult height gap (about 13 cm total) corrects the parental average toward what is typical for a child of that sex.
