How to use this calculator

  1. 1Get the real numbers. GVWR and payload are on the certification and tyre labels inside the driver’s door. GCWR and the tow rating come from the manufacturer’s towing guide for your exact cab, bed, engine, axle ratio and drive configuration — they differ by thousands of pounds between builds of the same model.
  2. 2Use a scale weight for curb weight if you can. A CAT scale run costs around $15 and tells you what the vehicle actually weighs with its options, not what a base model weighed on paper.
  3. 3Count everyone and everything honestly, including the accessories bolted on after purchase. A bed cover and a toolbox are 150 lb that never appeared in any brochure.
  4. 4Pick the trailer type so the tongue weight fraction is right, or enter your own measured percentage — which is the better number if you have it.
  5. 5Read the binding limit, not just the answer. It tells you what to change: payload problems are solved by taking things out of the truck, GCWR problems are not solved by anything short of a different vehicle.

Tongue weight is counted as payload because that is physically what it is. It rests on the tow vehicle rather than on the trailer’s own axles, and every manufacturer’s own literature counts it the same way.

GCWR is compared against the loaded vehicle, not the curb weight. Loading the truck reduces what is left for the trailer pound for pound.

The five limits are independent. Passing four of them is not passing; the lowest one is the answer.

Worked example

A half-ton crew cab advertised at 11,300 lb, with a family aboard

  1. 1.Payload = GVWR 7,100 − curb 5,388 = 1,712 lb.
  2. 2.Aboard: 4 people × 180 lb = 720 lb, plus 150 lb of gear = 870 lb.
  3. 3.Payload left for the tongue = 1,712 − 870 = 842 lb.
  4. 4.A travel trailer runs about 13% tongue weight, so the payload limit is 842 ÷ 0.13 = 6,477 lb.
  5. 5.GCWR limit: 17,100 − (5,388 + 870) = 10,842 lb. Not binding.
  6. 6.Tow rating: 11,300 lb. Not binding. Hitch: 12,000 lb gross and 1,200 ÷ 0.13 = 9,231 lb by tongue. Neither binding.

The same truck at the SAE J2807 test condition — driver and one passenger only

Why the tow rating is the wrong number to shop with

Walk into a dealership and the tow rating is what gets quoted. It is a real number, honestly measured, and it is almost never the limit you will actually hit.

The reason is arithmetic rather than marketing. Since the 2015 model year, tow ratings have followed SAE J2807, a standard every major manufacturer adopted precisely so the numbers could be compared. It specifies the test conditions in detail: the vehicle carries a driver and one passenger at 150 lb each and nothing else, it must hold at least 40 mph up the 11-mile Davis Dam grade at 100°F with the air conditioning running, and it must reach 60 mph in under 30 seconds with the rated trailer behind it.

Read that again: a driver and one passenger, and nothing else. The rating describes what the powertrain, cooling system and brakes can handle. It says nothing about whether the vehicle has any capacity left to carry the trailer’s tongue once you have put your family in it — and the tongue is the part that lands on the truck.

This is not a criticism of the standard, which made tow ratings honest and comparable for the first time. It is a criticism of using one number in isolation when the manufacturer publishes four.

Tongue weight is payload, and it is a bigger bite than anyone expects

A conventional trailer carries most of its weight on its own axles, but not all of it. Between 10 and 15% presses down on the hitch ball, and that portion is carried by the tow vehicle. It is payload in exactly the sense a passenger is payload, and every manufacturer counts it that way.

The consequence is a multiplier that catches people out. Every pound of payload you use inside the truck costs you roughly eight pounds of towable trailer at a 13% tongue weight. A 70 lb bed cover is 540 lb off the trailer. Two extra passengers are 2,800 lb off the trailer. A 200 lb fifth wheel hitch, before it has carried anything at all, is 1,000 lb off the trailer at a 20% pin weight.

Half-ton trucks are where this bites hardest, because they are marketed on tow rating and built with modest payload. A crew cab 4x4 with a comfortable trim level often has under 1,600 lb of payload while advertising over 11,000 lb of towing. The two figures describe genuinely different capabilities, and the smaller one governs.

Fifth wheels make the trade explicit. The pin weight of 15 to 25% is what makes them so much more stable than a bumper pull — the load sits over the rear axle instead of hanging off a lever behind it — but a 12,000 lb fifth wheel puts 2,400 lb into the bed, which is more payload than most half-tons have in total. That is the real reason fifth wheels live on three-quarter and one-ton trucks, and it has nothing to do with engine power.

The four ratings, and what each one is protecting

Each limit exists because a different part of the vehicle can fail, which is why passing four of them and missing one is still a fail.

  • Tow ratingprotects the powertrain and the brakes. It is the answer to "can this vehicle move and stop that much trailer up a long grade in the heat without cooking something".
  • GVWRprotects the vehicle’s own structure, springs, axles and tyres. Payload is simply GVWR minus what the vehicle already weighs, and it is the limit that most often binds when towing.
  • GCWRprotects the whole combination. It is the most that vehicle and trailer may weigh together, and it is why loading the truck reduces what you may tow pound for pound.
  • GAWR, front and rearprotects each axle individually. These are the sneaky ones: a tongue behind the rear axle can push the rear axle past its rating while the vehicle as a whole is still under GVWR, because the tongue acts as a lever.
  • The hitch ratingprotects the hitch, and it is a separate number from all of the above. It has two parts — gross trailer weight and tongue weight — and many hitches carry a higher rating that applies only with a weight-distribution system fitted.

Why the hitch is a lever, and what that does to the front axle

The hitch ball does not sit over the rear axle. It sits three or four feet behind it, and that turns the tongue weight into a lever acting on the whole vehicle.

The geometry is simple. Take moments about the rear axle: a tongue weight of W acting at a distance d behind an axle spacing of L lifts W × d ÷ L off the front axle, and the rear axle then carries W plus that lifted amount. On a truck with a 145-inch wheelbase and a 48-inch overhang, an 800 lb tongue lifts 265 lb off the front wheels and puts 1,065 lb on the rear.

The lost front axle load is what people feel. The steering goes light and vague, the nose points slightly upward, the headlights aim at the trees, and the vehicle responds slowly to a correction — which is exactly the wrong characteristic when a trailer starts to move around behind you.

That single geometric fact is the reason weight-distribution hitches exist. They use spring bars to apply a counteracting moment through the trailer’s A-frame, pushing load back onto the front axle. The target is not "level"; manufacturers specify it as restoring a defined share of the front axle weight that was lost, commonly between 50 and 100%.

Getting real numbers instead of published ones

Every figure on this page is available, and most of them are printed on the vehicle. The certification label on the driver’s door jamb carries GVWR and both axle GAWRs. The tyre and loading label beside it carries payload, in the sentence beginning "the combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed". GCWR and the tow rating are in the manufacturer’s towing guide, indexed by cab, bed, engine, axle ratio and drive.

The figure worth paying for is the real one. A CAT scale at a truck stop costs around $15 and weighs the steer axle, the drive axle and the trailer axles separately in a single pass. Two runs — one solo, one hitched — give you the actual curb weight, the actual tongue weight, and the actual axle loads, which is more useful information than any calculator can produce from published specifications.

Trailer weights deserve the same suspicion. A "dry weight" or "unloaded vehicle weight" in an RV brochure typically excludes the batteries, the propane, the awning, dealer-fitted options and every drop of fresh water — and water is 8.34 lb per gallon, so a modest 40-gallon tank is 334 lb. The number that matters is GVWR for the worst case, or a scale weight for the truth. Plan against the trailer’s GVWR, because sooner or later that is what you will be towing.

What this assumes, and where it stops

Assumptions

  • Tongue weight is treated as tow vehicle payload, which is how every manufacturer accounts for it.
  • Payload comes from the door sticker when one is entered, and from GVWR minus curb weight otherwise.
  • Tongue weight percentages default to typical figures for each trailer type and can be overridden with a measured value.
  • The axle transfer uses static moments about the rear axle and ignores suspension travel and any weight-distribution system.
  • Hitch class ratings are typical industry figures; the label on the hitch itself governs.

Limitations

  • Axle load ratings are not checked against a static axle weight, because that requires a scale. A combination can be inside GVWR and still over the rear GAWR — weigh the axles separately to confirm.
  • Tow ratings vary enormously within a single model by cab, bed, engine, axle ratio and drive configuration. Use the towing guide for your exact build, not the headline figure for the model line.
  • The effect of a weight-distribution hitch on the hitch’s own rating is not modelled. Many Class III and IV hitches carry a higher rating that applies only with weight distribution fitted.
  • Altitude, sustained grades and ambient heat all reduce what a vehicle can comfortably tow below its flat-ground rating, and none of that appears in a weight calculation.
  • Some states set their own limits on combination length, weight and licensing above certain thresholds, which can bind before any of the manufacturer’s ratings do.

Common questions

Why is my real towing capacity lower than the advertised rating?

Because the advertised rating was measured with a driver and one passenger and nothing else in the vehicle, and because tongue weight counts against payload. Every pound you put in the truck costs roughly eight pounds of towable trailer at a 13% tongue weight. A family of four and some gear routinely takes a half-ton from an 11,300 lb rating down to around 6,500 lb of real capacity.

Does tongue weight count against payload?

Yes, entirely. The 10 to 15% of a conventional trailer that rests on the ball is carried by the tow vehicle, not by the trailer’s axles, so it uses payload exactly as a passenger does. Fifth wheels are worse in this respect: 15 to 25% of the trailer weight lands in the bed, which is why they need a three-quarter ton truck or heavier even when the tow rating alone would suggest otherwise.

What is the difference between GVWR and GCWR?

GVWR is the most the tow vehicle alone may weigh, fully loaded — it protects the vehicle’s own axles, springs and tyres. GCWR is the most the vehicle and trailer may weigh together, and it protects the whole combination’s ability to accelerate, climb and stop. They are separate limits and both must be satisfied.

Can a half-ton truck tow a travel trailer?

Often yes, but a smaller one than the tow rating suggests. Payload is the binding limit on nearly every half-ton, and a typical crew cab has 1,500 to 1,800 lb of it. After four people and gear, roughly 800 lb remains for the tongue, which caps a conventional travel trailer around 6,000 to 6,500 lb loaded. Plan against the trailer’s GVWR rather than its brochure dry weight.

Should I use the trailer’s dry weight or its GVWR?

GVWR, unless you have a scale ticket. Dry weight excludes batteries, propane, the awning, dealer-fitted options and all water — and fresh water alone is 8.34 lb per gallon, so a 40-gallon tank adds 334 lb. Loaded trailers commonly weigh 1,000 to 1,500 lb more than their advertised dry weight, and the tongue weight rises with them.

What is SAE J2807?

The standard that made tow ratings comparable between manufacturers, adopted across the industry by the 2015 model year. It defines the test: a driver and one passenger, at least 40 mph maintained up the 11-mile Davis Dam grade at 100°F with air conditioning on, and 0–60 mph in under 30 seconds at the rated trailer weight. It measures capability under a defined test, not what remains once the vehicle is loaded.
