How to use this calculator
- 1Open the driver’s door and photograph both labels. The certification label carries GVWR and the front and rear GAWRs; the tyre and loading label carries payload and the original tyre pressures.
- 2Enter the payload from the sticker if you have it. It beats GVWR minus a published curb weight, which assumes a configuration your vehicle probably is not.
- 3Count the accessories separately from the cargo. They are permanent, easy to forget, and routinely 150 to 300 lb in total.
- 4Use the trailer’s GVWR rather than its dry weight, unless you have weighed the tongue. Dry weights exclude batteries, propane, options and water.
- 5For the axle check, weigh the vehicle loaded but unhitched at a CAT scale and enter the drive axle figure. That converts an indicative check into a real one.
How the calculation works
Payload = GVWR − curb weight (or the figure on the yellow sticker)
Payload used = occupants + cab cargo + bed cargo + accessories + tongue weight
Payload remaining = payload − payload used
Rear axle gained = tongue weight × (1 + overhang ÷ wheelbase)
Front axle lost = tongue weight × overhang ÷ wheelbase
Rear axle loaded = rear axle scale weight + rear axle gained- GVWR

- GAWR
- Gross axle weight rating — a per-axle limit, listed separately for front and rear on the same label
- Curb weight
- The vehicle empty with a full tank of fuel and no occupants
- Tongue weight
- The share of loaded trailer weight resting on the ball, which the tow vehicle carries as payload
- Overhang
- Distance from the rear axle to the hitch ball — the lever arm that amplifies tongue weight onto the rear axle
The yellow tyre and loading label is more accurate than GVWR minus a published curb weight, because it was calculated for your vehicle with the options actually fitted.
The rear axle gains more than the tongue weighs. The hitch sits behind the axle, so the tongue pivots the vehicle: load comes off the front and lands on the rear on top of the tongue itself.
GVWR and GAWR are independent limits. Satisfying one does not satisfy the other, and the rear GAWR is the one a heavy tongue reaches first.
Worked example
An ordinary family setup on a half-ton crew cab
- 1.Payload = GVWR 7,100 − curb 5,388 = 1,712 lb.
- 2.Occupants: 4 × 180 = 720 lb.
- 3.Cargo: 80 lb in the cab and 150 lb in the bed = 230 lb.
- 4.Accessories: a 70 lb bed cover and a 60 lb toolbox = 130 lb.
- 5.Tongue weight: a 7,000 lb travel trailer at 13% = 910 lb.
- 6.Total carried = 720 + 230 + 130 + 910 = 1,990 lb.
- 7.Against a 1,712 lb payload, that is 278 lb over — 116% of the rating.
- 8.The tongue alone is 46% of everything the vehicle is carrying, and 53% of the entire payload rating.
- 9.Through a 48 in overhang on a 145 in wheelbase, the 910 lb tongue also lifts 301 lb off the front axle and adds 1,211 lb to the rear.
Result: 278 lb over payload — with nothing unusual loaded
The same truck with the trailer unhitched
- 1.Everything else is identical — same four people, same gear, same accessories.
- 2.Total carried = 720 + 230 + 130 = 1,080 lb.
- 3.Payload remaining = 1,712 − 1,080 = 632 lb, or 63% of the rating used.
- 4.The trailer tongue was the difference between 63% and 116%. One item, and it decided the whole question.
Result: 632 lb remaining — the tongue was the entire problem
Payload is the rating people blow through, and it is the easiest one to check
Of all the numbers on a vehicle, payload is the least glamorous and the most frequently exceeded. It is not hidden — it is printed in plain English on a yellow label inside the driver’s door, in a sentence beginning "the combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed". It is calculated for your vehicle, with the options it was actually built with.
The reason it gets exceeded is not that the number is obscure. It is that two large items rarely make it into anyone’s mental arithmetic: the tongue weight of a trailer, and the accessories bolted on after the vehicle left the factory.
Together those two routinely add a thousand pounds to a vehicle that had seventeen hundred to give. Add a family and their luggage and an ordinary half-ton is over its rating on an ordinary weekend, with no single item that looks unreasonable.
Why tongue weight is the item that decides it
A trailer carries most of its weight on its own axles. Between 10 and 15% of a conventional trailer, and 15 to 25% of a fifth wheel, presses down on the hitch instead — and that portion is carried by the tow vehicle. It is payload, in the same sense and by the same physics as a passenger.
The scale of it is what surprises people. A 7,000 lb travel trailer at 13% puts 910 lb on the ball. That is five average adults’ worth of payload, from a trailer most people would call mid-sized. A 12,000 lb fifth wheel at 20% puts 2,400 lb into the bed, which is more payload than most half-ton trucks possess in total.
The relationship runs both ways, and the reverse direction is the useful one for planning. At a 13% tongue weight, every 100 lb of payload you free up allows about 770 lb more trailer. Taking a toolbox out of the bed is worth nearly half a ton of towing capacity.
The rear axle can be over while the vehicle is not
GVWR is not the only limit. The certification label also lists a gross axle weight rating for each axle, and those are independent limits protecting the tyres, bearings, springs and brakes on that axle specifically.
The rear axle is the one a trailer overloads, and the mechanism is geometric. The hitch ball sits three or four feet behind the rear axle, so the tongue acts as a lever: it lifts weight off the front axle and puts that weight, plus the tongue itself, onto the rear. Take moments about the rear axle and the arithmetic falls out — the front loses tongue weight × overhang ÷ wheelbase, and the rear gains tongue weight plus that same amount.
For a typical truck with a 145-inch wheelbase and a 48-inch overhang, that is a 33% amplification. A 910 lb tongue puts 1,211 lb on the rear axle and takes 301 lb off the front. It is entirely possible for a vehicle to be a few hundred pounds under GVWR with its rear axle several hundred pounds over GAWR, and the only way to know is to weigh the axles separately.
A weight-distribution hitch addresses exactly this. It uses spring bars to apply a counteracting moment through the trailer’s A-frame, pushing load back onto the front axle and off the rear. It does not reduce the tongue weight, and it does not create payload — the total is unchanged — but it puts the load where the vehicle can carry it.
What actually weighs what
Estimating payload use goes wrong in predictable places. These are the items that are consistently heavier than people assume.
- Water — 8.34 lb per gallon. A 40-gallon fresh tank is 334 lb, a 30-gallon grey tank another 250 when full. Travelling with full tanks is the most expensive habit in RV payload management, and the easiest to change.
- A bed cover — 40 to 80 lb for a soft roll-up, up to 150 lb for a hard one-piece. Fitted after the curb weight was measured, so it never appeared in any published figure.
- A fifth wheel hitch — 150 to 250 lb of hardware sitting in the bed before a trailer is anywhere near it. A gooseneck ball is far lighter, which is one reason equipment haulers prefer them.
- A weight-distribution hitch — 60 to 100 lb for the head, shank and spring bars. Worth every pound, but it is payload.
- Propane — 4.24 lb per gallon plus the cylinder. Two full 30 lb cylinders and their mounting are roughly 130 lb.
- Tools and recovery gear — a modest toolbox, a floor jack and a set of ramps reach 200 lb without any single item feeling heavy.
What being over payload actually means
Exceeding payload is not a threshold where something breaks at 101%. It is a rating with margin designed into it, and going over does not guarantee a failure on any given trip.
What it does is spend the margin. Springs and tyres run closer to their limits, and tyre failure is the most common serious trailer-related incident on the road. Braking distances lengthen, because brakes are sized against the rated weight. Handling degrades, particularly the light front end that a heavy tongue causes. Heat builds faster in the bearings and the transmission.
There are also consequences that arrive on paper. Vehicle warranties can be denied for damage sustained while overloaded. Insurance claims after an incident can be complicated by an overloaded combination, and in a commercial context or after a serious accident, weights are among the first things investigated. Several states weigh recreational vehicles at scales.
The practical response is not anxiety, it is arithmetic. Weigh the combination once at a CAT scale, find out where you really stand, and then decide what comes out — or accept that the trailer you are shopping for needs a different truck. Both are reasonable answers; guessing is not.
What this assumes, and where it stops
Assumptions
- Payload comes from the yellow tyre and loading label when supplied, and from GVWR minus curb weight otherwise.
- Curb weight is assumed to include a full tank of fuel, as manufacturers define it.
- Tongue weight is estimated from the trailer type’s typical percentage unless a measured value is entered.
- The axle transfer uses static moments about the rear axle, ignoring suspension travel and any weight-distribution system.
- The rear axle check is only meaningful when a scale weight is supplied; without one, only the transfer is shown.
Limitations
- Without axle scale weights this cannot tell you whether an axle is over its GAWR — only how much load the tongue moves. Weighing costs about $15 and settles it.
- A weight-distribution hitch changes how load is shared between the axles, and none of that redistribution is modelled here. It does not change the payload total.
- Published curb weights are frequently several hundred pounds below what a specific vehicle weighs with its options fitted, which makes the derived payload optimistic.
- Tyre load ratings can bind before GAWR does, particularly on vehicles fitted with tyres other than the originals.
- This is a static weight calculation. Dynamic loads on rough roads, in emergency braking and during sway events are considerably higher than the static figures.
Common questions
Where do I find my truck’s payload capacity?
On the yellow tyre and loading information label inside the driver’s door, in the sentence "the combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed X lb". That figure is calculated for your specific vehicle with the options it was built with, which makes it more reliable than subtracting a published curb weight from GVWR.
Does tongue weight count towards payload?
Yes. The 10 to 15% of a conventional trailer that rests on the hitch ball is carried by the tow vehicle, not the trailer’s axles, so it consumes payload exactly as a passenger does. On a mid-size travel trailer that is around 900 lb, which is more than half the total payload of a typical half-ton truck.
What happens if I exceed payload capacity?
Nothing sudden, but the margin the rating protects is gone. Tyres and springs run closer to their limits, braking distances lengthen, handling degrades and components heat up faster. Tyre failure is the most common serious trailer incident. Warranty and insurance claims can also be affected by an overloaded combination.
Is GVWR the same as payload?
No. GVWR is the maximum the loaded vehicle may weigh in total, including its own curb weight. Payload is what is left over for people and cargo — GVWR minus curb weight. A truck with a 7,100 lb GVWR that weighs 5,388 lb empty has 1,712 lb of payload.
Can a weight-distribution hitch increase my payload?
No. It moves load between the axles, taking weight off the rear and returning it to the front, which can bring an axle back under its GAWR and restores steering feel. The total the vehicle is carrying is unchanged, so payload and GVWR are unaffected. The hitch head and bars themselves add 60 to 100 lb of payload use.
