How to use this calculator

  1. 1Use the trailer’s GVWR unless you have a scale weight. Tyres must survive the heaviest trip you will actually take.
  2. 2Read the load rating off the sidewall rather than looking it up. It appears as "MAX LOAD 2540 LBS AT 65 PSI COLD" and is specific to the exact tyre fitted.
  3. 3Enter the placard pressure from the trailer’s own certification label. On most trailers it equals the tyre’s sidewall maximum.
  4. 4Be honest about travel speed. This is the input that changes the answer most, and being optimistic here defeats the purpose.
  5. 5Read the four-digit DOT date code on the sidewall for the age. "3223" is the 32nd week of 2023 — the tyre’s birthday, and the number that decides when it should be replaced.
  6. 6Check pressures cold, before the first drive of the day, and check the inner tyres on any dual-wheel axle.

Special Trailer (ST) tyres are load-rated by the Tire and Rim Association at a maximum 65 mph. For 66–75 mph, TRA directs cold inflation be raised 10 psi above the placard pressure; for 76–87 mph, raise it 10 psi **and** reduce the load by 10%. The load number on the sidewall is a 65 mph figure.

Tongue weight is subtracted because it is carried by the tow vehicle, not by the trailer’s tyres. A higher tongue percentage means less load on the trailer tyres.

Load is assumed shared evenly between tyres, which real trailers do not manage — uneven ground, an uneven load and axle alignment all create imbalance. The 20% reserve exists partly to absorb this.

The speed rule is Tire and Rim Association guidance applied by the trailer tyre industry, not a legal speed limit.

Worked example

A 7,000 lb travel trailer on Load Range D tyres, travelling at 70 mph

  1. 1.Tongue weight = 7,000 × 13% = 910 lb, carried by the tow vehicle.
  2. 2.Load on the trailer axles = 7,000 − 910 = 6,090 lb.
  3. 3.Across four tyres, that is 1,523 lb each.
  4. 4.The sidewall says 2,540 lb, so the tyres are at 59.9% of capacity with 40.1% in reserve. The load is not the problem here.
  5. 5.The speed is. At 70 mph the Tire and Rim Association guidance requires cold inflation 10 psi above the placard, so 65 + 10 = 75 psi.
  6. 6.Load Range D has a maximum cold pressure of 65 psi. The placard already specifies it, so there is nowhere to put the extra 10 psi.
  7. 7.The tyres are comfortably within their load rating and cannot legitimately be run at 70 mph. The options are 65 mph, or Load Range E tyres and wheels rated for 80 psi.

Result: 1,523 lb per tyre — 60% loaded, but 70 mph needs 75 psi and Load Range D stops at 65

A heavily loaded 14,000 lb fifth wheel on Load Range E

  1. 1.Pin weight = 14,000 × 20% = 2,800 lb, carried by the truck bed.
  2. 2.Load on the trailer axles = 14,000 − 2,800 = 11,200 lb.
  3. 3.Across four tyres, 2,800 lb each against a 3,520 lb rating.
  4. 4.That is 79.5% of capacity, with 20.5% in reserve — just above the 20% usually recommended.

The number on the sidewall is a 65 mph number

Special Trailer tyres are a distinct category, and the most consequential thing about them is not widely known: their load ratings are calculated on the assumption of a maximum operating speed of 65 mph.

This is not a footnote. The Tire and Rim Association load formula for ST-designated tyres builds the 65 mph assumption in, which is part of why ST tyres carry load ratings 10 to 20% higher than a light truck tyre of the same size. The extra capacity is bought with a speed restriction.

The guidance above 65 mph is specific. Between 66 and 75 mph, cold inflation must be raised 10 psi above the placard pressure and the full load rating still applies. Between 76 and 87 mph, the pressure increase still applies and the load must additionally be reduced by 10%. Above 87 mph there is no rating at all.

The problem is that most trailer placards already specify the tyre’s maximum sidewall pressure, because unlike car tyres, trailer tyres are sized to their load and run at maximum. When the placard says 65 psi and Load Range D tops out at 65 psi, there is no room to add ten. The only compliant responses are a slower speed or a higher load range.

This puts a large number of trailers on the road in a position their owners are unaware of: within their load rating, above their speed rating, and unable to meet the pressure requirement that would make the speed acceptable.

Why trailer tyres fail, and why it is rarely the tread

Tyre failure is the most common serious trailer incident on the road, and the two dominant causes are under-inflation and age. Tread depth is almost never the reason.

Under-inflation kills tyres through heat. A soft tyre flexes further in the sidewall on every revolution, that flexing generates heat, and heat degrades the bond between the rubber and the steel belts. The damage accumulates internally where no external inspection will find it, which is why a tyre can look perfect on the morning it fails. Running a trailer tyre ten psi low for a few hundred highway miles is enough to do real harm.

Age kills them through oxidation. A trailer typically stands still for most of the year, often outdoors in sunlight, and the rubber compound oxidises and cracks whether the tyre is rolling or not. The standard guidance is replacement at five to six years from the date code irrespective of tread depth, and most trailer tyres are discarded with the great majority of their tread remaining.

The four-digit DOT date code is the number to know. Stamped on the sidewall, "3223" means the 32nd week of 2023. It is the tyre’s manufacture date, not its purchase date — a tyre can sit in a warehouse for a year or two before being fitted, which is worth checking when buying.

Reserve capacity, and why 20% is the number

Running trailer tyres right at their rating is legal and unwise, and the usual recommendation is to keep at least 20% in reserve. There are three reasons, and they compound.

First, load is never shared evenly. A trailer sitting on a crowned road, a load that is heavier on one side, an axle slightly out of alignment — each puts more weight through some tyres than others. The nominal even split is an average, and the tyre carrying the most is the one that decides the outcome.

Second, a single failure transfers everything. When one tyre on a tandem axle fails, its share does not disappear; it lands on the tyre beside it, often instantaneously and at speed. A tyre already at 95% of rating is not going to survive that transfer, which is how one blowout becomes two and a modest problem becomes a serious one.

Third, the load figure you calculated is optimistic. It came from a static weight on level ground. Road inputs, braking, cornering and any sway event all produce dynamic loads well above the static number.

Twenty percent absorbs all three. It is why moving up a load range is frequently the right purchase even when the current tyres are technically adequate.

ST, LT and P: which tyre belongs on a trailer

Three tyre types get fitted to trailers, and they are not interchangeable in the way their sizes suggest.

  • ST — Special Trailerdesigned for the job: stiffer sidewalls to resist sway, a load rating 10 to 20% above an equivalent LT tyre, and a shallower tread because a trailer tyre does not need to drive or steer. The cost of the higher rating is the 65 mph assumption built into the load formula.
  • LT — Light Trucka legitimate alternative with real advantages — better speed ratings and often better construction — at a lower load rating for the same size. Going to LT usually means going up in size or load range to keep the same capacity. Check the specific tyre rather than assuming.
  • P — Passengernot suitable. Passenger tyres are built with flexible sidewalls for ride comfort, which is precisely wrong for a trailer: the flex contributes to sway, and the load rating must be derated substantially when a P tyre is used on a trailer. Manufacturers do not recommend it.
  • Radial vs bias-plyradials run cooler, last longer, roll with less resistance and are what almost all modern trailers use. Bias-ply tyres survive in some applications for their stiffer sidewall and lower price, at the cost of heat and rolling resistance.

The maintenance that actually prevents failures

Trailer tyres respond to a short list of unglamorous habits, and they are the difference between tyres that reach their age limit and tyres that do not.

Check pressures cold, before the first drive of the day, every travel day. Cold means before the trailer has moved — a tyre warmed by ten miles of highway reads several psi high, and setting it to placard while warm leaves it under-inflated once it cools. Trailer tyres run at maximum sidewall pressure, so there is no judgement involved: set it to the placard.

Check the inner tyres on any dual-wheel axle. They are hard to reach, easy to skip, and the failure mode is severe — a deflated inner tyre transfers its full load to the outer one and destroys it within a few miles, usually without the driver noticing anything.

Look at the sidewalls for fine cracking at the base of the tread blocks and around the bead. That is what age failure looks like before it becomes a blowout.

Cover the tyres when parked for long periods, or park on boards rather than directly on hot tarmac. Ultraviolet light and heat are what age the rubber, and a trailer that spends eleven months a year sitting outside is ageing its tyres the whole time.

And carry a working spare that is the same age question as the others. A five-year-old spare that has never been fitted is a five-year-old tyre.

What this assumes, and where it stops

Assumptions

  • Load is assumed shared evenly between all tyres, which real trailers only approximate.
  • Tongue weight is subtracted from the trailer weight because it is carried by the tow vehicle.
  • The speed rule follows Tire and Rim Association guidance for ST-designated tyres: +10 psi from 66 to 75 mph, and +10 psi with a 10% load reduction from 76 to 87 mph.
  • Maximum cold pressures are the standard figures for each load range: B 35 psi, C 50, D 65, E 80, F 95, G 110.
  • Ratings in the load range table are typical for one common size and vary between makes and sizes.

Limitations

  • Real load distribution between tyres is uneven, and the tyre carrying the most is what matters. Weighing each side separately on a scale is the only way to know.
  • The speed guidance is industry practice from the Tire and Rim Association, not a legal speed limit, and some tyres carry their own speed symbol that supersedes the general ST assumption.
  • Tyre load capacity varies with inflation pressure below the maximum. This page works from the maximum-pressure rating, which is how trailer tyres are normally run.
  • Axle, hub, bearing and wheel ratings are separate limits that can bind before the tyres do, and none of them are checked here.
  • Age-related deterioration depends heavily on climate, storage and ultraviolet exposure. The date code tells you when the clock started, not how fast it has been running.

What is the speed rating on trailer tires?

Multiply the load rating on the sidewall by the number of tyres. Compare that against the loaded trailer weight minus the tongue weight, since the tongue is carried by the tow vehicle. Aim to use no more than 80% of the total, leaving 20% in reserve for uneven load sharing, dynamic loads and the possibility of one tyre failing and transferring its load to its neighbour.
